Here’s the Captain America for my Avengers picture.  I decided to use the movie designs for all the characters.  Unfortunately the Captain America uniform in the Avengers is even lamer than the one in the comics.  Whatcha gonna do?

Star spangled man with a plan. Really?

With shadows.

With shield.

I thought I might try doing a group shot of the Avengers now that the movie is coming out.  I’ll get around to each character individually and then put them together in Photoshop.  In the meantime, here are some quick sketches as I work out the composition.

Phase 1! Really rough layout.

Phase 2 (incomplete)! Not as rough layout.

Not included:  The picture of me sans shirt in all the character poses that I used for reference.

mustache man

Yup.

I drew this for my nephew’s 8th birthday based on a character he created called Mustache Man.  Not quite sure what his powers are, but it probably involves good grooming and long trips to Studio 54.  Pudding Boy should probably steer clear of him.

Boom.

Layla Dobbs, professional bank robber.  She still gets a kick out of it, but sometimes she needs to add some extra bang to the proceedings.  Time for something new, I suppose.  Whatever will she do?

Wam.

Calvin Ward, aka Wingman, longtime sidekick to the Aviator.  Is there an maximum age for sidekicks?  Apparently not.

Batman can't catch a break. Until he does.

Listen, saying I’m looking forward to this movie would be like the Colonel saying he couldn’t wait for the new batch of chickens he was going to fry up to arrive.  As a Batman fan, it goes without saying.

However, that Kentucky fried enthusiasm for the movie only carried through in the conception of this picture, because at some point during the pencilling I just rushed to get it inked because I wanted to get to the Photoshop practicing.  As a result, the lines got sloppier, and I got less finger-licking satisfaction out of this picture than the last Batman one.

Plus, the Heath Joker is just a lot more visually interesting than Tom Hardy Bane.  It’s like comparing fried chicken to boiled chicken.  And I am not talking about the performances of the actors nor the tastes of the differently prepared poultry.  Both, I am sure, are worth my time and enthusiasm, but visually I’d rather be looking at a plate of Southern fried chicken smothered in gravy than a boiled chicken leg.

I’m going to end there, as I need to go get some food in me.  Possibly from a bucket.  But here’s another doodle just because this post excedes two paragraphs (that’s a rule, yeah?).  And always remember:  Do not get chicken grease on your comic books.

An oldie from the sketchbook, Owlman!

Batman does not appreciate a good magic trick.

This was fun to draw.  One of my favorite movies.  Definitely my favorite superhero.  On a related note, I just started reading Supergods by Grant Morrison.  It’s right up my comic book geek alley.

Chris Reeve had good posture.

Superman

Look! Standing on the ground! It's Superman!

And for my first(ish) post here’s a study I drew of the first superhero.  I used Christopher Reeve in the first Superman movie as reference.  My mom used to tell me I was named after him.  Although not true, that piece of non-trivia still stays with me.
